FERNDALE – Limpopo triumphed over South Africa’s other provinces in this year’s Mintek Minquiz, while Gauteng did not even feature in the top five provinces.

South Africa’s brightest science and mathematics school pupils took part in the annual quiz, testing their knowledge at different universities and institutions around the country in the provincial qualifiers in May, and then converging on Mintek’s Praegville offices for the final round between 15 and 16 July.

Limpopo, Eastern Cape, Northern Free State, North West and Western Cape were the finalists.

Through various scientific and mathematical trials, Limpopo won with 165 points while Eastern Cape came second with 160 points.

“The main aim of the quiz is to encourage the learning of maths and science, and to attract talent for Mintek employees of the future,” said the organiser of the event, Dominic Monama, who is a human capital development officer at the company.

The winning Limpopo team consisted of Lesibana Mmatli (17) from Pax College, Nhlanhla Mahlangu (17) and Carnetia Baloyi (18) from Hluvuka High School, and Mokgadi Setshekgamollo (17) from St Brendan’s Catholic Secondary School.

They each won R715 and a one-year subscription to Quest magazine, and each school represented received R3 575.

“The competition wasn’t easy,” said Baloyi.

“I told myself it is not about where I come from. I told myself I am here to do this, and I did.”

Monama said that this was about the 26th edition of the quiz for the company specialising in minerals and metallurgy.
