It is not a secret that South Africa has the highest percentage of unemployment.

After being unemployed for some time and not finding any jobs, four women got together and opened The Mole Hole Charity Shop.

“It all started when we realised that we do not want to sit and moan about unemployment. We wanted to do something that will benefit the community and we registered a non-profit organisation. We collected our own stuff and some from friends, families and relatives to open our charity shop,” explains Karen McLeod.

The Mole Hole is based at Northlands Deco Park in Northriding and was launched in October last year.

Karen says, “We need public support to support charity organisations. We do not make any profit out of this. The money we collect is used for the upkeep of the shop and 50 percent goes to various local organisations that we support.”

The staff of three include Jeanette Robertsons, one of the partners, and Lance Ruis, who volunteers and sells his artworks and then donate a percentage to other local charity organisations.

“We cannot afford to employ people at the moment because we are just starting out and all the money received is used for charities and the business space we are using at Deco Park,” explains Jeanette.

At present, they are running a charity drive, which challenges other business owners at Northlands Deco Park to collect and donate stuff to the Charity Shop. “All proceeds from the donated stuff will be used to kick start a soup kitchen. We are looking for non-perishables that we will sell and then donate a percentage of it to charity organisations,” explains Karen.
