Brazil lose. Randburg residents were supporters

Netherlands win and finish third while Brazil lose and finish fourth. Residents are supporters on either end.

RANDBURG – Netherlands beat Brazil 3–0 in the play-off for third place on day 24 of the 2014 Fifa World Cup Brazil, 12 July.

Residents proclaimed their support for Brazil on Facebook (see below).

This means Netherlands finish the tournament third, and Brazil finish fourth.

The match had chances at both ends, and with Brazil winning 58 percent possession and making more chances than Netherlands (11 shots versus Netherlands’ eight, and five shots on goal versus Netherlands’ five) the match was perhaps closer than the scoreline suggested.

Netherlands striker Robin van Persie opened scoring for his team in the third minute, converting a penalty by shooting hard into the upper right of the goal after teammate Arjen Robben was pulled down by Brazil defender and captain Thiago Silva in the box.

Defender Daley Blind scored the second goal, his first for his national side, shooting into the top right corner after Brazil defender David Luiz could not header a clearance in the 17th minute.

Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum made it three when he shot low into the bottom right corner, though Brazil keeper Julio Cesar got fingers to the ball, from a Daryl Janmaat cross in the first minute of injury time.

Germany and Argentina will play in the final tonight.
