Scrumptious soccer (and players) on Day 13 of World Cup

JOBURG - Football and biting on day 13 of 2014 Fifa World Cup.

More teams progressed, or were eliminated, on day 13 of the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil, 24 Jun, while Uruguay’s Luiz Suárez made headlines for a third incident in his career involving biting another player.

Residents have provided their views on the matches.

Costa Rica, Uruguay, Colombia and Greece advanced to the round of 16 while Italy, England, Japan and Côte D’Ivoire played their last matches.

Costa Rica and Greece will play each other and Colombia will play Uruguay in the round of 16.

Uruguay first beat Italy 1 – 0 in a group D match.

The goal was scored by Uruguay’s defender Godin, deflecting a corner off his shoulder into the goal.

But Suárez drew all the attention, appearing to bite the shoulder of Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in the box while waiting for a Uruguay free kick.

Afterwards, Fifa  confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been opened, meaning Suárez may face a lengthy football ban.

Italy’s coach Cesare Prandelli offered to resign after the match, despite him signing a two-year contract shortly before the world cup.

England and Costa Rica then drew 0 – 0 in group D.

England may have made nine changes to their starting 11 but won 53 percent possession and secured eight shots against Costa Rica’s four, and three shots on goal versus their opponents’ three.

Colombia then beat Japan 4 – 1 in group C.

Cuadrado first scored for Colombia through a penalty in the 17th minute, after Ramos was fouled by Konno in the box.

Okazaki equalised for Japan with a header from a cross in the first half’s injury time.

Martinez put Colombia ahead with a good finish after a lob-pass from Rodriguez in the 55th minute.

Martinez scored again, curving a shot in after a breakaway in the 82nd minute.

James scored Colombia’s fourth, chipping Japan keeper Kawashima in the 90th minute.

Faryd Mondragon (43) became the oldest player to play at a world cup, when he came on as a substitute for Colombia, beating Roger Milla who played when he was 42-years-old.

Greece then beat  Côte D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) 2 – 1 in group C.

This means that the Ivorians continuing their record of not progressing past the group stage at a world cup.

Samaris scored first for Greece, shooting over the approaching Côte D’Ivoire keeper Barry in the 42nd minute.

Wilfried equalised for Côte D’Ivoire through a good finish after a Gervinho pass in the 74th minute.

But Samaras won the match for Greece through a penalty in injury time after Sio fouled him in the box.

Marlon Abrahams, spokesperson for Randburg Football Club said that he was personally supporting Italy during the world cup.

“There is a philosophy in Italy,” he said.

“It is called bella figura, where the people have an innate style. They know how to be cool, and their team plays like that.”
