Vet students set up free clinic once a month

KYA SAND - Animals get some much needed attention.

The South African Veterinary Association (Sava), along with third-year students from Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute, hosts a free clinic for the animals of Kya Sand once a month.

On 14 June, project initiator (and founder of Pets and Animals in Need – PAIN) Karen Loots and her team of students were hard at work at Pipeline informal settlement in Agnes Avenue, Bloubosrand, where animals were brought by their owners to receive vaccinations and parasite control. Sterilisations are also done upon request at a meagre R250 per animal.

“We need the help of vets to volunteer and help out at the clinic for two hours a month and also to assist with sterilisations,” states Loots. “Our clinic starts at 2pm to 4pm once a month in Kya Sands, and we urge residents from the settlement to please bring their animals to the clinic to get them vaccinated, dewormed and sterilised.”

Local animal activist Klarika Nettleton was also there to physically go into the settlement to find animals in need of treatment, and bring them to the clinic. “It’s very important that these animals are taken care of and receive the vaccinations and sterilisations that they so desperately need.”

The dates of the next round of free veterinary clinics are as follows:

12 July, 16 August, 20 September, 18 October, 8 November and 6 December.
