JOHANNESBURG – World Cup becomes more interesting on day eight. Residents share their views.

Although they lost on day eight of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire and England still have a chance to make the round of 16.

On day eight (19 and 20 June) Colombia first beat Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) 2 – 1 in a group C encounter.

This was the first time Colombia won back-to-back matches at a world cup, but the Ivorians stand in second place in the group, following another result that night…

Rodriguez opened scoring for Colombia with a header from a corner in the 64th minute.

Quintero doubled the lead in the 70th minute, pouncing on a defensive error that gave the ball away.

Gervinho scored for the Ivorians in the 73rd minute, dribbling from the sideline into the box before putting the ball in.

Uruguay then beat England 2 – 1 in group D.

Uruguay’s super-striker Suárez scored first, heading from a lobed pass in the 39th minute.

Rooney equalised for England with an easy finish after Johnson drew in the defenders and keeper before offloading to him in the 75th minute.

But Suárez won the match in the 85th minute with a powerful shot after a header sent him passed the defenders.

Japan dominated in their match against Greece but could only draw 0 – 0 in group C.

The Asians won 68 percent possession, and produced 16 shots versus Greece’s nine, and 11 shots on goal versus Greece’s five.

This leaves the two teams tied at the bottom of group C with one point, Côte d’Ivoire second with three points and Colombia first with six points.

Colombia have already qualified for the round of 16, and the other three must fight for points in the final round of group matches.
