Police confiscate seller’s good

RANDPARK RIDGE – Resident objects to Metro police's confiscation of wooden fences sold next to Rabie Street.

Metro police conducted an operation on the morning of 11 June, removing wooden fences sold by people next to Rabie Street, Randpark Ridge.

The operation occurred between Monkor Road and River Road at around 8.45am.

Resident Rheinhardt du Toit was on site, asking Metro police to stop.

Metro police officers said that if he carried on he would be obstructing justice, and asked him to leave.

“There is a lot of crime around this area,” du Toit explained.

“The people selling are trying to make an honest living [instead of engaging in crime]. This should not be done to them.”

According to Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood, the City of Johannesburg’s bylaws state that trading on a highway or within a certain distance of a “traffic area” is illegal.

Wood also said that he looked down on this activity because it was unsafe.

He continued that acting deputy director of Metro police, Mike Smith, was performing more operations in the area and Wood looked forward to working with him.

Questions were sent to Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar and comment is awaited.

Details: Metro police 011 758 9100.
