Carina takes Swim for Hope to Italy

JOBURG - Richard Child offers Carina Bruwer a word of encouragement as she takes Swim for Hope to Italy on 15 June.

Carina Bruwer, lead player and founder of pop group Sterling EQ, is also known for her swimming feat, will be taking Swim for Hope to Italy on 15 and 20 June.

Swim for Hope is an initiative to raise awareness and funds for children who have cancer.

Parkview resident Richard Child, Bruwer’s swimming friend, offered her some encouragement on her latest swimming endeavour and also wished her the best for her swimming challenges.

According to Child, “Having walked through Tuscany, I understand why Carina has chosen Italy as the next swimming feat, and jokingly added that he hopes Bruwer’s passion to help children and to take Swim for Hope to Italy has nothing to do with her Italian husband.

“I hope the swims are challenging enough to be a real test of her talent. May the weather gods bless Carina. Looking forward to seeing her smiling on the mainland,” said Child.

Bruwer will be attempting a rare crossing of the Strait of Bonifacio (15km) between Corsica (France) and Sardinia (Italy) which has only been officially achieved once before by a trio of British swimmers. Thereafter on 20 June, she will attempt a record of 14km quadruple crossing of the Messina Straits between Sicily and Calabria which will make her the first woman to cross this unpredictable stretch of ocean more than twice.

Swim for Hope was pioneered by Bruwer’s successful solo attempt of rounding Cape Point in 2013 in support of the Little Fighters Cancer Trust. This was followed up in 2014 with the successful rounding of Cape Point by 14 open-water swimmers, who broke both male and female records.
