Multiple medals for Randburg karate kid

RANDBURG - Silvio Biagioni received silver and bronze in the second African Youth Games in Gaborone on 31 May.

Karate champion Silvio Biagioni from Randburg Hoërskool had a spectacular performance at the second African Youth Games in Gaborone on 31 May.

With 21 sporting codes, 54 countries and 2 500 athletes, Biagioni brought home a silver as well as a bronze medal, which he received by beating Algeria and Kenya and narrowly losing to Egypt in the semi-finals.

Silvio admitted excitedly that competing for the country meant a lot to him. “It was such an honour to compete for South Africa under the Sascoc banner. Bringing back the medals for South Africa makes me feel very proud and affirms that when you are passionate about something, you need to go full out for it,” he said.

His team reached the finals where they lost to Botswana, but clenching a silver medal for Team SA.

According to Silvio’s mother Angelique, it is not easy to win a medal at an African Game which only comes around every four years. “As parents we are very proud for just having the opportunity to compete at such a prestigious event as part of national duty. The fact that Silvio medalled at the Games was extremely special to us, as it goes to show that dedication and hard work are rewarded. We are also very grateful to Randburg Hoërskool that fully supports Silvio and also to Sascoc that is investing in our athletes from a young age,” she concluded.

South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) and team SA finally managed to take 96 Medals topping the Table medals in the tournament.
