Recess grows, while agency waits

FONTAINEBLEAU – Rabie recess appears unattended to despite, roads agency's statement.

Five weeks after Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said the agency would “immediately” temporarily secure the infamous recess on Rabie Street, Fontainebleau it appears nothing has been done.

The eyesore lies between 7th Avenue and Percy Road, and its formation was due to a burst water pipe.

It is becoming wider and more uneven over time, and vehicles caught in the right lane heading towards Malibongwe Drive either drive through the recess endangering their tyres and chassis or swerve into the oncoming lane, endangering their lives.

When the recess was first reported to Peters-Scheepers on 6 May, she responded the same day that “the area will be immediately secured for road users as an interim measure until the recess is repaired.”

However a month later, when it appeared that nothing had been done and following an enquiry, she said on 5 June, “According to the depot, this is a 10sqm Johannesburg Water reinstatement which was made safe. Johannesburg Roads Agency has been in contact with Johannesburg Water and as soon as we are in receipt of the wayleave order, we will be able to begin with repairs.”

She was then asked the same day to explain what a ’10sqm Johannesburg Water reinstatement’ was, and when the roads agency would receive the wayleave order to begin work.

No response was forthcoming by the time of publishing.
