Linden dodges paid parking bullet

LINDEN-Linden is one of the few areas that will not be affected by paid parking rollout.

About R10.

That is how much you are likely to pay for an hour of parking in numerous suburbs around the city.

Despite heated objections from businesses and residents, on-street paid parking has been rolled out in various areas such as Greenside, Norwood, Rosebank, Fordsburg, Mayfair, Parkhurst, Midrand, Graighall, Emmarentia, Randburg, Parkview, Roodepoort and Johannesburg Central.

Linden residents however will not have to dig a little deeper into their pockets paying for street parking.

“We made sure that we sit down with the department and fight for people’s rights to make sure that Linden residents do not have to pay for parking,” said Ward 99 Councillor Bruce Herbert.

“It is more expensive to park in the street than parking underground at the Cresta Mall, and it is even free to park outside at the mall where it is more safe and supervised,” commented Ellen Levy who is part of ward 99 council.

“The Councillor has fought for the rights of the people by giving sufficient evidence why Linden is not a problem area,” Levy added.

One of the reasons that made Linden dodge this potentially economic crippling bullet is that the area is not considered “a problem area in terms of parking provisions”.

Other reasons stated were:

– Only 65 percent of the available parking on a typical weekday is used, thus paid parking is not recommended.

– The Linden suburb consists of eight blocks, within a study area bound by 5th Street to the north, 3rd Avenue to the east, 8th Street to the south and 4th Avenue to the west.

– 3rd Avenue is classified as a Class 3 Activity Arterial mobility road. 1st Avenue, which lies to the east of 3rd Avenue, becomes quite congested during morning and afternoon peak periods.

– A number of Metro Bus routes run along 1st Avenue, 3rd Avenue as well as 4th Avenue with mini bus taxi routes recorded along 3rd Avenue.

Councillor Herbert encouraged residents not to abuse the privilege by parking in-front of business areas all day. He advised residents to park on the provided parking lots.
