Pinnochio is on at The People’s Theatre

NORTH RIDING - Marnitz van Deventer takes part in his first big theatre production.

North Riding resident Marnitz van Deventer got his theatre production debut playing the characters of Giuseppe, Policeman, Cat and Circus Master in Disney’s My Son Pinocchio showing at the People’s Theatre.

Van Deventer said the characters he plays are all different, and he loves being able to play three diverse personalities in one play. He added that to get into the character, he would say one word related to the character which then helps him get into character.

Before being cast in the Disney production, Van Deventer studied physical theatre at the University of Cape Town for four years, where he gained knowledge about acting, projecting his voice on stage, and other important educational facts about the theatre.

“It is important that one has the knowledge about their craft and this is why it was important for me to go to tertiary as this has helped me do well in my work,” said van Deventer.

His skills have also earned him an experience in television and a few drama presentations at schools on behalf of a various corporate companies. “From an early age I had always wanted to be an actor, and despite the fact that is often does get stressful, and requires me to be focused, I am passionate about it and would like to continue doing what I do.”

When Van Deventer is not on stage with his Disney cast, he dedicates his time to writing his up and coming play, and he spends as much time as he can with his supportive family.

Although he loves doing both theatre and television work, he stated that his heart belongs on stage. “Theatre is bigger, and the performance is a lot different, I like that. I would advise anyone who would like to get into the industry to not only believe in themselves. No matter how hard it gets, if its something you want, you should never give up on it.”

The Disney production of My Son Pinocchio is currently showing at The Peoples Theatre.
