Public Protector addresses ethical principles by leaders

JOBURG - Advocate Thuli Madonsela inspires individuals at the University of Johannesburg on 29 May.

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela engaged with the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Alumni on the Convocation Day in Johannesburg on 29 May.

Madonsela spoke at length to the university’s management, alumni and students. The soft spoken Madonsela charmed the audience with her presentation and charisma.

Her talk focused on the importance of good corporate governance and adherence to ethical principles by leaders.

She encouraged people to represent the same level of ethics which they expect of their leaders, and highlighted that a code of ethics binds everyone who works for the state.

Touching on the newly elected ministers, Madonsela informed that the newly appointed ministers already know what is expected of them. “We saw the ministers when they were sworn in, now we expect them to follow the constitution as it is,” said Mandonsela.

“It is not my place to decide who should be in leadership, the society should decide,” she added.

The highlight of the night was when students received an opportunity to engage with Madonsela about some of the issues that are creating waves in the media. When asked why she refused to become part of the political parties that wanted her, she said: “We all have purposes in life, and I don’t believe my purpose is to become a politician.”

Speaking to Leanne Manas of Morning Live, the two touched on President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla. Advocate Madonsela, who was identified by Times Magazine as one of the most influential people in the world, stood firm about the Nkandla issue, and told people that she is not going to force anyone to pay. “If you know better, you do better,” said Madonsela.

When asked how she feels about the government taking her office to court, the public protector informed calmly that a good government is one that takes you to court, which made the audience cheer for her with a round of applause. She also advised the audience that they shouldn’t allow the loudest among them to become their leader. Advocate Madonsela concluded by saying people should challenge themselves and become good citizens.
