Election posters are still up

SUNDOWNER - A month after the national elections, a number of political parties have still not removed their promotional posters on the roads.

The South African national elections took place on 7 May and a month after the election, a number of political parties have still not removed their promotional posters on the roads.

According to Joburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers, there are regulations with regards to election registration.

“The requirements must be complied with in respect of any poster relating to elections or voter registration. Every poster must be attached to a board made of weatherproof material, and may only be secured to an electric light pole,” said Peter-Scheepers.

Peter-Scheepers stated that a candidate nominated for election may be displayed from the date of such nomination. “The poster may be displayed from 14 days prior to the date of the election or voter registration or if applicable, 14 days prior to the date of nomination of candidates, depending on which date is earlier.”

She stressed that any poster must be removed by the person displaying it within five days after conclusion of the election or voter registration, failing which, city council shall within 10 days after the conclusion of the election or voter registration notify the relevant party to remove the posters within a time period specified, failing which, the council may remove the posters itself against a prescribed fee per poster payable by the relevant party.
