Please stop leaving baby animals out in the cold

RANDBURG – SPCA appeals for residents not to abandon animals at their gate during the night.

For the third time in recent months, a sealed box containing a litter of kittens has found its way to the SPCA’s doorstep in the dead of a cold, winter’s night.

“I don’t understand how people can just leave baby animals outside at night,” stated Zama Mabena, administration manager at Randburg SPCA. “Whether they’re left in a bag or a box, we find them waiting for us, as we get to work in the morning. They’ll freeze to death in this weather.”

Mabena has appealed to Randburg residents who want to take animals to the SPCA, to do so during the day when the staff are available, and he also wants to assure these residents that they will not be shown away.

“If they really have no other alternative than to bring the animals at night, then they must please phone our after-hours number,” he continues. “Our staff on the property can then come to the gate and take the animals inside where it’s warm and they can be fed, instead of waiting outside in the cold till morning comes.”

Mabena says that the outside intercom isn’t working at the moment, “but if we are phoned, we will come.”
