Ferndale Post Office closes

FERNDALE – Reasons for post office's closure vary between multiple robberies and renovations.

Residents are still wondering why the Ferndale Post Office closed on 15 April.

Reasons given for the closure vary, and its official voice is unreachable.

The office on Oxford Street has a notice on its glass door stating, “The Ferndale Post Office will be closing and the last day of business will be on 15 April 2014. Operations will move to the Randburg West Post Office, Shop G52, Brightwater Commons, Randburg. Please collect your parcels and registered items from the Randburg West Post Office.”

Details of the Bromhof, Fontainebleau and Randburg post offices are then listed, but nothing is mentioned about the reason for the closure.

Resident Phillip Magosi claimed that he is friends with previous employees at the office, and they told him the office was “robbed four times” and closed due to risk of further robberies.

However, Randburg police spokesperson Johannes Maja responded that the reason for the closure was due to renovations and not crime.

Randburg Sun phoned the spokesperson for the South African Post Office Malusi Fuphe, multiple times over three days to obtain an official reason for the closure, but he never answered his phone.

While in operation, resident Erwin Schwentzek was unhappy with the office’s employees’ conduct.

“The post office in Ferndale was a shining example of bad service, attitude and incompetence,” he said.

“I was one of the many customers who rather chose to drive some kilometres for better service, than face the aggravations of miserable, unfriendly staff.”
