Armed escort for Rea Vaya buses

JOBURG - Metro police are providing Rea Vaya bus drivers with armed escorts following a spate of attacks on the buses.

Metro police are providing Rea Vaya bus drivers with armed escorts following a spate of attacks on the buses.

Police had been escorting Rea Vaya buses after 15 were stoned in April.

Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar confirmed the attacks, adding that most of them were near West Park cemetery.

According to Minnaar, police were escorting the buses in the mornings and evenings to ensure the safety of bus drivers and commuters.

The attacks had stopped, but police would continue to escort the buses for as long as it was deemed necessary, he added.

Rea Vaya operations general manager, Eric Motswane said the windows of 15 buses were smashed by unknown assailants.

“For now we cannot pinpoint any particular association because none have raised any objections to the Rea Vaya… We think it is sheer thuggery.” Motswane said.

He said no clear report of the incidents had yet been provided and investigations were still underway.

However, he said, “The security agencies need to do more. We cannot go on mere speculation.”

Babu Maharaj, spokesperson for Litsamaiso, the company that operates Rea Vaya, said the police escort was merely a precautionary measure.

He added that there had been no real protest issues or resistance to Rea Vaya services.

The attacks were isolated incidents, which seemed to be at the hands of mischievous groups, he said.
