Husband and wife team up for marathon

ROBIN HILLS – Local residents are eager to run in the upcoming Comrades Marathon.

Randburg residents are ready to run the Comrades Marathon Down Run on 1 June.

The marathon is 90km and starts from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, descending most of the way.

Its highest point is at Umlaas Road (870m) and the run spans 12 hours.

Robin Hills resident Bernard Dickens will be running with his wife Marilyn in their fourth Comrades Marathon, for the team Run/Walk for Life.

“We feel good about the marathon,” Bernard said.

“Our preparation has gone really well and we had a good season.”

He explained that most runners start training six months before the marathon, but because the couple had run the marathon four times previously, they had learned to start training eight months in advance.

In preparation they ran three 42km marathons and two 56km ultra marathons, and try to run about 60km per week.

“I am excited,” Marilyn said.

“I will definitely finish.”
