Canoeist will run in marathon

RANDPARK RIDGE – Local canoeist to run in the Comrades Marathon Down Run.

Local canoeists will also be running in the Comrades Marathon Down Run on 1 June.

Randpark Ridge resident Glen Staples will be running with nine other canoeists of the Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) in this year’s event.

Staples received three medals at previous Comrades marathons: two bronze in 1998 and 2012, and a Bill Rowan in 2013 for finishing in under nine hours

Many members of the club enjoy cross training, of which running is one of the easiest, most accessible and possibly the best form of cross- fitness preparation.

Running is also an important cross training for canoeists as during marathon season and on river races, many portages are necessary where paddlers have to jump out of their boats and run some distance carrying them, to avoid dangerous obstacles on the river, or just as part of the marathon programme which includes endurance testing.

With 18 000 entrants for the Comrades Marathon, Randburg is sure to be well-represented.
