Support for those who grieve

JOHANNESBURG - The Compassionate Friends team offers counselling for grieving parents, grandparents and siblings.

The Compassionate Friends non-profit organisation continues to open its doors to Randburg residents, offering counselling for grieving parents.

“We offer counselling for parents, siblings and grandparents who have lost children of any age. The reason we have focused particularly on the loss of children is because a child is an important part of one’s life. Losing a child, is different to losing any other family member,” said Highlands North chapter leader, Maryna Seldon.

Seldon stated that although the organisation is based in Highlands North, there are support groups in different parts of the country. “The one in Randburg meets every second Saturday of each month at 11 André Street, corner of President Ridge,” explained Seldon.

“The support group offers the support needed by families to enable them to deal with a child’s death. Our services are free of charge to everyone, giving those who cannot afford therapy and other forms of counselling, a chance to get help.”

The organisation offers one-on-one sharing and counselling for people who do not wish to speak in a group.

“The support group in Randburg does not have one-on-one sessions. Those who require it would have to visit our main branch [also known as chapter] in Highlands North. A team of counsellors also gives talks at various schools and hospitals.

“It is hard to deal with any kind of death. But we advise people to speak out and reach out to organisations such as ours, which enables them to be in a more stable frame of mind,” added Seldon
