BREAKING: Robbery suspects apprehended in less than an hour

HONEYDEW – Three suspects were arrested in connection with a robbery on Duiker Street on last Thursday.

19 May – 12:30pm

Swift and decisive action of security companies and the Honeydew police led to the arrest of three suspects, after an alleged housebreaking on 15 May.

Shortly after 8am, four suspects allegedly held an elderly woman at knifepoint at her home in Duiker Street, Randpark Ridge. They continued to rob the woman of jewellery, a cellphone, cash and a laptop.

As they fled the scene, the victim’s daughter drove into the driveway. She summoned the sector vehicle for assistance. The police helicopter was also called in to assist the ground forces, as the suspects had fled into a bushy area.

The suspects continued to make their way down the green belt area, covering quite a distance. A resident in Wilgeboom Street spotted three of them, hiding in the bushes. He immediately contacted Dunmar Security, and security officer Petrus Huyzers responded within minutes.

Huyzers single-handedly apprehended the suspects, holding them at gunpoint, and led them down the veld area toward President Fouché Road. Honeydew police were ready and waiting and arrested the three suspects at 9.10am. A fourth suspect was also arrested later that morning. All stolen items were recovered.

“The community has really been stepping up and helping our security teams fight crime,” said Johan Stapelberg, Dunmar Security Operations manager. “If it wasn’t for their help, these suspects would have gotten away. Huyzers proved to be very brave in that situation and handled it particularly well.”
