Another electricity tariff adjustment may be on the cards

JOBURG - South Africans could be in for another electricity rate hike – or a decrease.

South Africans could be in for another electricity rate hike – or a decrease.

In a statement released on 15 May, Eskom confirmed that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) would at the end of May announce whether consumers can expect another electricity tariff increase in 2015.

The regulator was currently conducting an evaluation on the expenses incurred by Eskom over the past three years, ending March 2013, by scrutinising Eskom’s regulatory clearing account (RCA).

Eskom was granted an 8 percent annual tariff increase for five years from April 1 last year, but the tariff may be adjusted sooner depending on an over- or under-recovery in the regulatory clearing account.

“Customers could experience an increase or decrease in the price of electricity as a result thereof,” the power utility said.

According to the utility, the adjustment was likely to commence no later than 1 April 2015.
