High Tea for baby shelter

RANDPARK RIDGE –Four of Rand Park High School Debutantes, and businesswoman and motivational speaker Edith Venter, hosted the High Tea at The Middleton in Morningside, to raise funds for the Lighthouse Baby Shelter in Sundowner.

Elegant dresses, delicious cakes, tasty champagne, prizes and a fashion show were the order of the day at a Mother’s Day High Tea on 10 May.

Four of Rand Park High School Debutantes, and businesswoman and motivational speaker Edith Venter, hosted the High Tea at The Middleton in Morningside, to raise funds for the Lighthouse Baby Shelter in Sundowner.

The Debutantes are 112 girls between the ages of 15 and 17 attending Rand Park High School, tasked with raising money for the school’s educational and sporting facilities and giving a portion to charity.

All the proceeds of this High Tea will be given to the baby shelter in Sundowner, which claims to provide a safe haven for abandoned and unwanted babies until they are fostered or adopted.

Founder of the shelter, Eleanor Dustan said the money would be used for the children’s school fees and the general running costs of the shelter.

Sinead van Es, Simone Heuser, Kaylyn Dodd and Tyla Podmore were the Debutantes behind the High Tea.

“I visited the shelter one day,” van Es said.

“Seeing their joy, it was great to know you can help them. There is a lot people should do to support shelters around them.”

Co-host Edith Venter thanked the audience for their contributions toward the shelter, congratulated the girls for the work they were doing, and thanked their mothers and school for raising them with morals.

“The girls obviously have exceptional morals and it is thanks to the grounding by moms and the school,” she said, before stressing that a woman’s beauty also relates to the good she does for others.

Mrs South Africa 2014/15 finalist Talita Jansen van Vuuren also congratulated the girls.

“It is nice for the girls to give, and get involved so young,” she said.

“One of my philosophies is to serve the community. These girls are an example to me.”

Jansen van Vuuren brought boards with her which read, “#bring back our girls”, referring to the movement demanding the release of more than 200 kidnapped schoolgirls in Nigeria by Boko Haram terrorists.

Many people had their photos taken with the message.
