Zandspruit Clinic to receive medical equipment

JOBURG - Health Department joins hands with Zandspruit Clinic to help identify and treat people with high blood pressure in the township.

Medical equipment is a scarce resource in townships with underdeveloped clinics.

The Zandspruit Clinic seems to be bucking this trend with the help of corporate donors.

The clinic received blood pressure monitors at a handover on 6 May.

The machines were donated to the Gauteng Department of Health by the Welch Allyn Interactive Company as part of their social responsibility.

“These machines were donated to the ward-based outreach teams in order for them to do screening of households in Zandspruit,” Community engagement officer of Joburg’s Region C, Cecile Retief, explained.

“This will help them to identify people with high blood pressures in the area and this can help them to give advice on how to lower blood pressure.”

Ward 114 councillor Maureen Schneemann said that the clinic and all of its staff were grateful for the donation.

“A donation like this will help out residents in Zandspruit who can’t make it to the clinic for medical screenings.”

This initiative was started by fourth-year medical students who are doing their practicals in Zandspruit on screening communities on various medical conditions including high blood pressure and diabetes. Their efforts resulted in a partnership between the city of Johannesburg and Wits University.
