Meter fiddling

SUNDOWNER - City Power urges residents to make sure that their meter's are not a fraud.

Numerous residents in Sundowner have encountered City Power meter fraud, and despite reporting it, the problem continues.

According to residents, the meters are tampered with by a City Power employee, or someone who knows how to re-programme the meters. They would either set the meters to charge less or more for electricity. In other cases they would program the meters to give the resident free electricity.

In response to the matter City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele said they have experienced the same issue in many other suburbs.

“We have reconnected the meters of those who have logged a call about it, and we ask that more of our customers report the problem,” he urged.

“Once reported, City Power metering electricians together with the JMPD will go the to customer’s property to investigate [if the meter has been tampered with]. If it is found that indeed the meter is bypassed, a fine of R1 500 will be imposed on the offending customer and the meter will be taken away. On request for re-connection, the offender will pay a R5 200 re-connection fee and a new meter will then be installed for them,” warned Mphahlele.
