Danceweb studio based at Sandton View shopping centre, competed in the Battle of the Giants competition held from 11 to 13 April at Sun City. The studio brought home 12 gold, 11 silver and two bronze medals.
Danceweb, which opened in 2000, accommodates all types of dancers from mainly Randburg, Bryanston and surrounding areas. It was founded by Mandy and Craig Bullock who pride themselves on being home to amazing talent.
Battle of the Giants is a national, all dance styles championship that has been hosted at Sun City Resort for the past 25 years. According to Mandy, Danceweb has participated for 14 years.
To prepare for this major competition, Mandy said the dancers committed plenty of hours over many months to dancing.
“The dancers’ fitness levels and mental strength must be at an optimum level when competing, and that is what we focus on perfecting,” she said.
A team of coaches contributes to assisting different teams within the studio when preparing for competitions. “Coaches are important during training sessions as they are there to mentor, motivate, direct and guide the individual dancer to achieve their ultimate goal,” said Mandy.
“Choreographers are there to choreograph the routine and to show the dancers the correct technique, composition and image needed for the particular dance style.”
Teamwork, discipline, confidence, enjoyment and a sense of achievement are what Mandy and her husband hope their dancers took from competing in the Battle of the Giants, as well as the other competitions Danceweb Studio takes part in.
Although the studio did extremely well recently, the dancers have already begun preparing for two more South African dance competitions in order to qualify to represent South Africa for the 12th year in a row at the international hip-hop dance championships taking place in Germany this year.
Both board members of the South African Dance Teachers Association, Mandy and Craig’s goal is to continuously inspire, motivate and encourage the youth to dream big and believe in their dreams, and to help them realise that their success is within their reach if they work hard.
