Afrikaans comedy a treat at Montecasino

An Afrikaans comedy, Vettie Vettie, will feature at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre from 7 May to 1 June.

According to producer, Kosie Smith, the play pokes fun at women’s eternal struggle to shake off those excess kilograms.

“It will also be the first time for an Afrikaans theatre production to be staged at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre,” said Smith.

“This is a laugh-a-minute comedy. With winter around the corner, it brings the prospect of bathroom scales heaving under the consequences of indulging in forbidden comfort food,” added Smith.

Mentioning the characters in this comedy, Smith said Vicky played by Hanna Grobler, is the successful owner of a bookstore in Hatfield, Pretoria. She is single and visibly fat. When Vicky meets the man of her dreams, Tom Delport, played by André Lotter, she decides to shed those excess kilos once and for all so she can claim her prince.

Unfortunately it is not that easy to lose weight especially when you have housemates– one is a gourmet cook and the other likes to remind you of all your previous failed diets!

Henri, played by Tobie Cronjé, has been friends with Vicky long enough to know that her ‘get thin resolutions’ won’t last long. He derives great pleasure from teasing her incessantly about it. To make matters worse, he is not tactful and does not believe in euphemisms – he says exactly what he thinks.

James, played by Luan Jacobs, is the culinary expert who is incapable of making an ordinary meal consisting of rice, meat and potatoes – staple South African fare, in other words. However, he works for Vicky in her bookstore and has a soft spot for her. Is poor Vicky going to succeed in bowling over the man of her dreams?

Directed by inimitable theatre veteran André Odendaal and presented by Kosie House of Theatre, the comedy has been translated into English by Johan Bernard and adapted by Pierre van Pletzen. It will be performed nationwide.
