Refugee children stage musical

JOBURG - The Three2Six Education Project for refugee children at Sacred Heart College in Observatory will present a Musical Theatre Challenge from 22 to 26 April.

The Three2Six Education Project for refugee children at Sacred Heart College in Observatory will present a Musical Theatre Challenge from 22 to 26 April.

Minimax Performing Arts and the MindBurst Workshop will assist 150 refugee children at Sacred Heart College in developing and staging their own Musical Theatre Production from scratch. Although this will be no easy task, the refugee children of Three2Six have shown their resourcefulness, creativity and perseverance in other holiday programmes they have participated in and have created books, an art exhibition and a stop-frame animation that impressed audiences.

The Three2Six Education Project is hosted by Sacred Heart College which makes its classrooms available to refugee children between 15h00 and 18h00 in the afternoons. Children from Grade 1 to Grade 6 attend and learn language, maths and life skills.

Refugee teachers and volunteers manage the project. During the school holidays, the Three2Six children are able to come to school in the mornings and do activities that are not part of their usual programme.

MindBurst Workshop, a company that facilitates critical and creative thinking skills, has facilitated previous holiday programmes. In 2012, it organised an ambitious art project, which lasted for five days, and enabled the children to work with professional artists and produce carefully considered works.

This was called Journey with an Artist and the exhibition that grew out of it raised over R47 000 for the Three2Six Project. Journey with an Artist was nominated for a BASA Award in 2013.

This year, the passionate team from Minimax Performing Arts (also BASA Award nominees), who have had a lot of experience in developing these kinds of productions in short time-frames, have agreed to work together with Sacred Heart College and MindBurst to manage the production process and provide choreographers for each grade.

The performance on 26 April, from 16h30 to 18h30, will be an advocacy performance. Any donations are welcome. The money raised will contribute towards the running of future holiday programmes for refugee children. Tickets are available at Sacred Heart College, on request or by invitation.
