Frustrated by authorities’ lack of effort

FERNDALE - JRA and Joburg Water cannot keep up with the number of roads that are deteriorating.

A resident has become frustrated by the lack of effort from the authorities to fix a deteriorating section of the road in Elgin Avenue, Ferndale.

Resident Gareth Hooper complained that authorities have failed to repair the section road in Elgin Avenue since last year.

“The issue has existed since Joburg Water fixed a leak at the end of September last year,” explained Hooper, “that started the deterioration. The Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) filled the road a few times, but it is still deteriorating.”

He explained that there were three temporary fillings of the road, but he did not know if the roads agency was responsible for all of them, as one of the residents might have carried out one of the fillings.

Apparently two were filled with sand, and one was fixed with a “black mixture” like tar.

These efforts were only made this year while Hooper complained it took that long for Joburg Water to notify JRA about the need for the road repair.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood said he had referred the issue to JRA but he has also not received feedback. The agency’s spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers did not respond in time for print.

Joburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe claimed that both entities communicate with each other when projects affect each department.

“When the road is eroded, Joburg Water alerts the Joburg Roads Agency to come and resolve the road part of the work, once the leak is repaired,” said Kabwe.
