Electoral lists to be released

JOBURG - Only one objection to candidates submitted on political parties’ lists was upheld by the commission. According to the IEC, 45 objections were received.

The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) is expected to release the final lists of parties and candidates contesting the elections.

According to the IEC, the compilation of lists of parties and final lists of candidates who will contest the election was set to be completed on 22 April.

The lists will be published on the commission’s website ahead of the 7 May elections.

Thereafter candidates will be issued with certificates in terms of section 31 of the Electoral Act. The certificates would be issued to candidates by 24 April, the commission said.

Only one objection to candidates submitted on political parties’ lists was upheld by the commission. According to the IEC, 45 objections were received.

The parties which received objections to their candidates were the African National Congress, the Democratic Alliance, Agang SA, Congress of the People, Economic Freedom Fighters, African Christian Democratic Party, United Democratic Party, National Freedom Party and Ximoko Party.

“The electoral commission is not aware of any appeals which have been lodged with the Electoral Court,” it said in a statement. Of the objections made one was upheld because the candidate was convicted of an offence and sentenced to more than 12 months in prison, the IEC said.

The commission did not reveal the candidate’s identity or to which party the candidate belonged.

However, according to the Star the disqualified candidate was National Freedom Party (NFP) member Mgcineni Mavuso.

Following the IEC’s decision to uphold the objection, Mavuso was told by the party that he was no longer on its candidate list for Parliament or the Mpumalanga legislature.

NFP national chairperson Maliyakhe Shelembe told the newspaper that the party was not aware of Mavuso’s conviction when it drew up its list.
