Bowling teams battle it out in Honeydew

HONEYDEW - Bowls Tournament a big success.

Mixed fours bowling teams gathered at Honeydew Bowls Club on 5 April, for their 13th Annual Bowling Tournament.

According to the president of the Honeydew Bowls Club, David Chantry, 26 mixed fours teams logged in to do battle for numerous prizes at this event sponsored by Northriding Toyota. “The morning started with a charity event in support of the Blind Bowlers Association. The funds raised were significantly increased by a generous donation of R500, from the eventual runners up under their skip JJ Bedford Owen,” explained Chantry.

He stated that the tournament consisted of 104 bowlers in 26 teams of mixed fours, which comprised two women and two men per team, who played three sets of 12 ends each. “The sides were drawn from a hat leaving each team not knowing who their competitors would be until moments before they ventured on to the rinks,” he added.

Teams from Krugersdorp, Witpoortjie, Discovery, Ruimsig, Leases and many more from the Sables area along with Honeydew and the Sables executive and Technical teams competed on the manicured greens. Chantry also mentioned that Honeydew Bowls Club was recently awarded the Most Improved Greens, in the district and that the greens did not disappoint. “After 30 minutes break the second draw was completed and the teams took to the rinks in another round of tightly fought battles. By 2.45pm the teams were on the rinks fighting for the highest scores. 16 Prizes were awarded in all for the tournament,” explained Chantry.

He said the prize giving culminated in the top three teams being given their cash prizes by Lionel Pawley of Halfway Toyota. The first prize went to Bernard Beckett & team from Leases, the second one went to JJ Bedford Owen & an International team and the third prize went to Neil Perucatti & team, also from Leases.

“The tournament was so successful that many teams stated they would be back again for the next tournament which will be held to commemorate Honeydew Bowls Club 40th Anniversary on 31May this year,” he concluded.
