Cawrse sisters skating their way up

RANDBURG - Ice skating a social sport and career option.

Two sisters, Catia Cawrse (12) and Kerry-Leigh Cawrse (14), said they enjoy ice skating so much that, they want to make careers out of it.

Kerry-Leigh started skating when she was six years old and Catia at the age of four.

“All my friends took ballet but I wanted to try something different and ice skating was my number one option,” explained Kerry-Leigh.

Catia said she copied Kerry-Leigh, by joining ice skating when she realised that, her sister was having fun.

“I copied my sister because she was having so much fun,” Catia added.

The siblings said their supportive mother has made it possible for them to participate in various ice skating competitions.“I didn’t want the girls to do ballet because I thought it needed a lot of money and a lot of work,” said the mother of the girls, Joanne Cawrse. “Little did I know that skating required a lot of money and a lot of time,” she added.

Both girls are under the wings of Debbie Bates, who is their coach.

Catia participated in the Central Gauteng Provincial Figure skating Championships 2013 at the Northgate Skating Rink. She skated in the Chicks Over 11 division where she won the gold prize. The younger sister further participated in the Academy Synchro Team, where she scooped the gold.

Kerry-Leigh also participated in the central Gauteng provincial figure skating championships 2013, and she came third and won the bronze medal for the Bronze Hawks Club.

She also participated in the Lion Cub Novice Synchro and the Academy Synchro Team and received gold medals for both divisions.

Joanne said it makes her happy, to see the girls skate because it is a social sport and they can enjoy it while making careers out of it.

“It is exciting that, there is a synchro team because the team that Catia is in, is the first of its kind in the country,” she remarked.
