Residents take back their park

FONTAINEBLEAU - The community of Ward 104 cleaned up their park, and its surrounding areas in an effort to get rid of the crime.

The community of Fontainebleau came together on 15 March in an effort to take back their park and facilities in Martha Avenue.

“The residents have come together in collaboration with the Linden Community Policing Forum as well as the Linden Police Station and various security companies,” said Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood.

“They wanted to clean up their neighbourhood so it is safe for their children to play outside. This was something great which uplifts the community.”

According to resident and organiser of the clean-up, Natalie Morton the park and its surrounding areas is notorious for criminal activity. “Cleaning these areas will decrease the crime in the area and will thus create a safer environment for our suburb,” she said. “We want to take back our community and stop vagrants from living in the suburb.”

The assistant district commissioner of the Randburg Scouts, Grant van Rooyen said, “We always encourage Scouts to do community work, this has been a great way for us to give back.”

Morton added that there was a wonderful response from the community. “More than 60 residents came to help clean up,” she said. “We are off to a good start. I am very glad that City Parks has partnered with us in maintaining the park and the surrounding areas more regularly.”

In future Morton hopes that more residents and local businesses will participate in the cleaning up of the area.
