Child snatcher at Aurora

SUNDOWNER – A woman allegedly tried to kidnap two girls (3) and (5).

A woman allegedly tried to kidnap two girls at Curro Aurora Private School in Sundowner on 13 March.

A red-haired woman who appeared to be about 60 years old approached a parent and enquired about her children.

The mother became anxious and shouted.

Security at the school then asked the woman to leave immediately.

The mother, Debbie Fendick, was fetching her daughters aged three and five in the afternoon when the woman approached her.

“She started asking me if she could talk to me and I said no I was in a hurry,” Fendick said.

“She was very persistent and kept saying ‘but I can talk to you while you put them in the car, wow they are beautiful children’.”

The woman asked Fendick if her oldest daughter was about five years old, which she found “very unsettling”.

Fendick insisted she had no time to talk and as her five year old ran to the other side of the car Fendick became very frightened.

“I shouted ‘no’ to her, at which point the woman followed her to the other side of the car which to me was an indication she wanted her. The security guard was so fast he immediately rushed over and apprehended her…she left the property straight away and got into the passenger side of a 4X4.”

Fendick believes she was an easy target because she was trying to put her children in the car.

“I am eternally grateful to the guard at the school.”

A representative of the school, who did not wish to be named, claimed the incident was not severe, and this was why the school did not open a case with the police.

“There was no snatching or grabbing and no reason to report the incident to the police,” she said.

The school posted details of the incident on Facebook on 17 March and encouraged pupils and parents to be aware of their surroundings at all times.

Honeydew police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs did not respond to questions sent to er at the time of going to press, but it can be confirmed a case was not opened.
