Mind the bridge

Residents of Douglasdale plead with the Johannesburg Roads Agency to have the Niven Road bridge fixed urgently.

Due to the Niven Road bridge being on the verge of collapsing, residents of Douglasdale want the Johannesburg Roads Agency to repair it urgently.

Ward 115 councillor Chris Santana met with roads agency inspectors last year to inspect the bridge but no action has been taken.

Resident Vinesh Naidoo said, “It is absolutely necessary to close off the bridge because of the extensive damage which has compromised the overall integrity of the structure.”

Another resident Linda Bogle said she and many other residents would be unable to get out of the suburb if the bridge was closed.

In response to the matter, roads agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “The bridge is a low lying bridge which means that it will overflow from time to time. “Our teams have secured the bridge for motorists to use due to the fact that there is no alternative access route to the suburb.”

She added that a consulting engineer was in the design and costing stage to repair the bridge and in the interim the region’s maintenance depot would secure the bridge to ensure the free flow of traffic.
