Victory looms over purple aliens

The struggle against the invasive Verbena plant is coming to an end.

Delta Park’s effort to remove invasive verbena plants is proving successful.

“We are definitely winning the war against the verbena,” said Shirley Tebbutt, Delta Park volunteer and publisher of its online newsletter. “If you look at the grasslands in the bird sanctuary area, below Delta Park School, the heaps of drying verbena show just how much is being removed.”

The plant has been a cause for concern because it spreads quickly and too much of the plant in the park would cause many of the bird species to look for different habitats.

Much of the plant’s removal has been the result of a concerted effort by volunteers and workers since January. According to Tebbutt, pupils of Trinity House High School and St Stithians College removed a large portion of verbena.

Tebbutt encouraged pupils to spend their required community service hours helping to remove the remainder of the plant from the park.
