Rain, monster potholes, floods, collapsed roads

Heavy rains cause major damage to infrastructure.

Although the weather seems to be clearing up, the recent heavy has left a path of destruction.

Four giant potholes have formed on CR Swart Drive between Anita Street and Rosemary Lane in Northwold. They already claimed their first victim on 5 March when Nicholas Vilakazi drove on the street for the first time.

“I couldn’t see the pothole at the time because of the rain,” said Vilakazi. “I tried to swerve but there was another car in the way so I couldnt avoid it.”

With the harsh economic conditions and the rise in fuel prices, Vilakazi now has to incur costs of buying another tyre. The potholes are within a few metres of each other and are in both lanes.

In Ferndale a part of Cork Avenue collapsed on 4 March leaving a dangerous gaping hole.

While in Douglasdale, Niven Avenue was completely flooded. Marcia DaBossmama posted photos of the road on the Randburg Sun Facebook page and said, “A few years back, somebody decided it would be a good idea to redesign the bridge at the end of the complex driveway. Previously it was single lane and very low slung, but at least it provided no real obstruction so when it rained water flowed over, causing no structural damage.

“The new bridge was built up, but in doing so has narrowed the channel so that it doesn’t flow easily. It also now causes an obstruction that traps all sand and vegetation, and that further obstructs the flow. Result? Well, see for yourself. And I need to add that the road is a cul de sac that serves houses and complexes.”
