Load shedding’s back

JOBURG - Eskom started with load shedding at 9am today.

Torrential rains experienced in the past week did not only leave residents with extra potholes but also with the looming threat of load shedding.

Eskom announced that it will begin with load shedding at 9am and is most likely to continue till the weekend.

Residents can expect up to two hours of power cuts in different suburbs. City Power is still to advise as to which suburbs will be affected by load shedding.

Spokesperson Andrew Etzinger said seven days of heavy rain had left coal stocks wet.

“Certain power stations are open-cast coal mines, and therefore vulnerable to the [adverse] weather.”

The utility had earlier asked large industrial customers to reduce their consumption by 10 percent but Etzinger said it appears that it will still not be enough, hence the decision to implement load sheddiding.

Eskom also urged other users to cut down on their electricity consumption because the power grid is under severe pressure.
