Zumba flash mob to hit Cresta

Dancefun studio's will be showcasing a zumba flashmob at Cresta shopping centre on 1 March.

A zumba flash mob will be taking place at the Cresta shopping centre on 1 March as part of the Cancer Association of South Africa’s (Cansa) shavathon.

The event is organised by Dancefun Studio in Blairgowrie and 94.7 Highveld stereo broadcast live from the event.

“The flashmob will take place outside Nedbank at entrance two,” said one of the organisers, Robyn Tserpes. “All members of the public are invited to watch and join in on the zumba. We have invited other zumba instructors from around Johannesburg.”

The flash mob will be directed by a licensed zumba fitness instructor, Alicia Toumilovitch who has produced a song mix using five different zumba songs. The intention of this flash mob is also to promote zumba as a physical activity.

“Zumba fitness is a Latin-inspired cardio-dance workout that uses music and choreographed steps to form a fitness party atmosphere,” said Toumilovitch. “While many of the types of dance and music featured in the programme are Latin American inspired, classes can also contain everything from jazz to African beats to country and hip-hop.”

According to Tserpes, zumba was started in the mid-nineties by creator Alberto Perez. The programme currently reaches 10 million people in more than 90 000 locations across more than 110 countries.

Tserpes said that zumba was truly for anyone who could stand up and dance. People of any gender, all ages, shapes and sizes were welcome and encouraged to attend classes. “If you can shake your body and like fun music, then this class is for you,” she said.
