Doctor goes the extra mile

Dr Klaus Leschner's long breath in the water brings about funds for charity.

Randburg paediatrician Dr Klaus Leschner will go the extra mile for his patients, in fact, the extra eight miles.

Leschner participated in the Midmar Mile’s 8 Mile Club that is aimed at raising funds for charity.

He completed four one mile events per day and raised R10 000 for charity.

“This was my third time swimming in the 8 Mile Club,” he said. “There are different charities that benefit from this. I swim for Children’s Haematology Oncology Clinics (Choc), but charities such as ACT Save the Rhino also benefit from the swimmers’ participation.”

This year about 60 swimmers participated in the 8 Mile Club and about 60 swam for breast cancer, Leschner said.

“When you enter for the 8 Mile Club, you need to raise at least R10 000 for the involved charity. If you do not manage to raise that amount, you might not be accepted if you want to enter the next year. If you raise even more than R10 000 it is a bonus for the charity.”

The charities that receive support from the 8 Mile Club include the SA Guide Dogs Association, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the KZN Society for the Blind and the KZN Society for the Deaf.
