Police’s response to muggings

Linden and Honeydew police claim to be involved while Metro police have not responded to call for assistance.

Victims and residents have blamed vagrants for a spate of violent muggings on and near Rabie Street, where it goes under the N1 Highway in Malanshof.

Vagrants live under the highway in an area which is situated on the shared border of the Linden and Honeydew police stations’ jurisdiction.

According to Linden Police Station spokesperson, Ndivhuwo Mulamo both police stations have been involved in decreasing crime in the area.

She added that the Department of Social Development had assisted in removing the vagrants, but they kept on returning. Ward 104 Councillor Mike Wood contacted Sergeant Daniel Mametja of the Metro police bylaw management unit and requested a raid where the vagrants live.

The Metro police has not responded to Wood to date and could not verify if a raid was imminent. Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar claimed that they had not received a single complaint about vagrants in the area

“Any person can complain,” said Minnaar. “Any bylaw complaints such as those to do with vagrants, illegal dumping or illegal shacks can be emailed to us. People can also phone us, but only if the email is unanswered.”
