No bridge over troubled water

The Agnes Road bridge collapses due to the river overflowing.

Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane requested residents to be aware of the collapsed bridge on Agnes Road in Bloubosrand.

According to Mafokwane the bridge collapsed because litter and debris blocked the water from flowing under the bridge. Following the recent heavy rains the river flooded and the bridge collapsed.

The bridge connects residents of Bloubousrand to the squatter camp in Msawawa. “Pedestrians still use the bridge although it is very dangerous and anything can happen,” said Mafokwane.

He said the Johannesburg Roads Agency had visited the site to establish how the bridge could be repaired.

“I suggest those who would usually drive across the bridge find alternative routes,” said Mafokwane. “It is uncertain how long the bridge will be closed and when it will be attended to by the roads agency, but I will keep residents and road users informed.”

Mafokwane is planning on arranging with Pikitup to meet with owners of construction companies to discuss the illegal dumping in Kya Sand, and highlight the effects their actions have on the community.

The roads agency was approached for comment, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to print.
