OPINION: Ingenious ways to rid your skin of pimples

From tomato pulp and toothpaste to aspirin and pawpaw, these home remedies are effective in treating skin ailments and infection.

People spend a fortune on products and treatments in trying to rid their skin of acne and related issues. Experiment with a few of these natural remedies and find one the works for your skin.

Always keep in mind the most basic form of pimple prevention is hygiene, so regular washing of the affected areas with mild soap twice a day is a must. It is not recommended to wash your face more than twice a day as overdoing it will leave the skin dehydrated.

1. Lemon juice diluted in warm water has great antiseptic properties. Apply it to the affected area.

2. Apply a warm wet rooibos teabag over the area as a quick and healthy fix.

3. The juice of raw papaya is known to be one of the best treatments for pimples. Apply the juice to the problem area.

4. Apply fresh mint juice every night to treat acne and pimples.

5. A mask of mashed cucumbers is known to assist in healing acne scars.

6. Tea tree oil deep cleanses pores of infection.

7. Rubbing potato slices directly over the face is a good scar protector.

8. Pineapple juice has a good amount of ascorbic acid which acts as a bleach for the skin, so apply it often and wash if off after 15 minutes to reduce scars.

9. Mix nutmeg powder with a little un-boiled milk and apply on acne and pimples and wash after an hour twice a week.

10. Wash your face twice a day in warm salty water. This will leave your face oil-free without aggravating pimples, as soaps are known to do.

11. Apply a mixture of fresh tomato pulp, honey and rose-water to your face and keep on for twenty minutes.

12. Dip a cotton ball in egg white and apply on clean skin. Wait an hour and wash off. Do it at least once a day for a few days.

13. Calamine lotion and toothpaste are common overnight remedies in drying out pimples. Apply to the problem area before bed and wash off the following morning.

14. Apple cider vinegar is an effective overnight treatment in providing your skin with a thorough clean.

All treatments should be carried out with care – always be aware of any unnatural reactions to products. Discontinue use if you experience discomfort.
