UPDATE: Fatal road rage incident

Bullets fly on Valentine’s Day – again.

A man was shot dead during a road rage incident on Malibongwe Drive, between Epson Avenue and Witkoppen Road on 14 February.

The driver of a motor vehicle alleges that a motorcyclist stopped in front of him, got off the bike, and started shooting at him.

The driver pulled out his own gun and shot the motorcyclist twice, once in the stomach and once in the arm. He claimed he acted in self-defence.

The driver of the motor vehicle was also taken to hospital for treatment of injuries, though the injuries were not from bullet wounds and their nature could not be confirmed.

“There are very angry drivers out there,” said Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane. “I wish people could just admit they get into a rage and then we could talk as brothers and sisters to resolve it. It takes little time to switch into a less-aggressive attitude.”

Mamonyane also said it was sad because “people are going to remember on Valentine’s Day that someone they know died”.

She said the police were still investigating the incident. The incident occurred between 6.50 and 7.10am.
