Diggers rugby looking up

Things are looking good for Diggers Rugby Club, after they hosted their 2014 AGM.

Positive sentiments and plans for improvement were conveyed at the Diggers Rugby Club’s annual general meeting.

“Last season we set lofty goals that were unrealistic and we had a tough time,” said club chairman Jonathan Palmer.

“But the results got better as the season went on. There are eight clubs in the same position as us and I believe the new blood can compete with each club. We’ve also got the right coaches.”

Club president Philip van Zyl said he was looking forward to the new year. “Last year was not that great but a lot will be looked at,” he said. “In previous years the club was running at a loss but we have started this year much better, the sponsors are helping there.”

The first team has a new head coach, Derek Page, who won the Border Premier League for the past two seasons with Old Selbornians in East London.

Plans were also announced to renovate and improve the pub. “We will make the pub the hub of the club,” said vice-chairman Dave Moore. “It will be a family friendly place where you can come and watch games on TV and it will be open seven days a week.”

The season starts with warm-up games from 15 March.
