“I would like to inform the South African people locally and abroad that the fifth national general elections in the Republic of South Africa will be held on the 7th of May 2014, throughout the country,” Zuma said.
After meeting with the Premiers and discussing election preparations with the Independent Electoral Commission, Zuma said he was satisfied that the commission’s preparations were at an advanced stage.
The electoral term of the present government will come to an end on the 22 April.
“These are historic elections as they take place during the 20th anniversary of our freedom from apartheid bondage,” he said.
Zuma reinforced the need for the public to “promote peace, tolerance and peaceful coexistence” during the elections and in the period leading up to the elections.
He also urged all South Africans to exercise their vote saying “we must continue participating in building our country.”
The public, especially the youth, who had yet to register to vote were encouraged to do so.
This weekend, 8 and 9 February, is eligible voters last opportunity to register to vote.
Registration stations will be open from 8am to 5pm across the country.
Meanwhile, home affairs offices across the country will also be open on 8 and 9 February to facilitate those eligible voters who do not have an identity document.
According to the Department of Home Affairs spokesperson, Ronnie Mamoepa all 403 homes affairs offices would also be open from 8am to 5pm at the weekend to issue identity documents to those without, in order for them to register to vote.
