Global scout fellowship in SA

International Scout and Guide Fellowship forms African regional committee.

The International Scout and Guide Fellowship Africa regional gathering was held in South Africa.

It was the fourth Africa regional gathering and the first in the country.

Fellowship representatives from Libya, Benin, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Belgium were present.

The gathering took place at Gilwell Florida Lake with the purpose of creating an African region of the fellowship. Representatives also visited Delta Park for a campfire and to plant olive trees.

‘We have just finished the constitution and launching of the first regional committee for sub-Saharan Africa,” said Mida Rodrigues, World Committee Chairperson.

The fellowship consists of about 75 000 scouts and guides over 18 years old in 61 countries and carries out projects in communities.

The fellowship in SA focuses on conserving the environment, which includes installing owl boxes around Johannesburg to kill rodents, but also provides clothing to premature babies at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, and facilitates self-development among the poorer communities.
