Swimmer heads for Sydney

Kyle van Niekerk is swimming his way to all kinds of victories.

During the school holidays St Stithians Grade 10 pupil Kyle van Niekerk participated in the Central Gauteng Aquatics Open Championship at the Ellis Park swimming pool.

He competed in eight events including butterfly, backstroke and freestyle over 50m, 100m and 200m.

He won all of his events and set numerous new meet records. The highlight was a new South African record in the 100m freestyle event in a time of 52.10. This previous record was set 15 years ago and was one of only two South African records broken at this championship.

Van Niekerk plans to go to the Australian National Age Championships in Sydney in April.
