Six hijackers arrested, seventh escapes

Metro and Douglasdale police raid leads to arrest of armed truck hijackers.

A joint operation at 10pm last night between local law enforcement and Metro police resulted in the arrests of six suspects for armed hijacking.

During the raid a seventh suspect was able to escape the arm of the law when he was taken into custody in Isando.

Police received a tip-off before the arrests.

The group of robbers’ modus operandi was hijacking trucks and storing the goods in warehouses located in Randburg, Kya Sands and Isando.

Officers recovered a large load of groceries, curtain material, detergent powders, facial products and body cream products at a value of five million rand.

Further investigations will confirm if the same suspects are linked to eight other similar hijackings.

Some 218 items of food products such as rice, flour, tins of beans and powdered milk were also recovered.

The stolen items are currently stored at the Douglasdale Police Station evidence room.

“We urge readers to contact the Douglasdale Police Station if they have any leads on the whereabouts of the suspect and to report any suspicious activity. The suspect is armed and dangerous,” said spokesperson for Metro police, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
