Commemorative coin announced

JOBURG- A special edition R2 coin, commemorating the Union Building’s centenary, will be introduced to the country’s coinage in 2014.

The coins will be minted by the South African Mint and the R2 circulation coin will be introduced from early 2014, the South African Reserve Bank spokesperson, Hlengani Mathebula said.

The South African Coat of Arms will be displayed on the front of the coin and the year of issue, with ‘South Africa’ written in isiXhosa (uMzantsi Afrika) and in Afrikaans (Suid Afrika).

The reverse of the coin bears an image of the Union Buildings.

According to Mathebula, a sterling silver R2 crown coin will also be for sale to collectors, however only 1 000 of these collector’s coins will be produced.

He added that a collector’s set, containing the crown, the circulation coin, and 20 commemorative postage stamps will also be available, but these will be limited to 700 sets.

The sets and the R2 crown will be available at the SA Mint and Coin World.
